Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. Trinity was organized by a number of Lutherans of Norwegian background in Coeur d’Alene on November 15, 1905. Prior to that there had been an Augustana Synod (Swedish) congregation which was started in 1900 but dissolved in the 1920s, and a group of Germans of the Ohio Synod formed a congregation in 1914 which dissolved after a few years.
